Notes: March 7, 2009 – Trust and Obey

 

Jeremiah 11

v 3. Cursed by the man who … (Is this speaking about you?)

v 7-8. How often must God warn us not to sin?

v 11-12. If God won’t hear our prayers, then who is able to save us?

v 13. False religion in every city; and on every street corner of the capital.

v 14. Don’t pray for them; God won’t hear you.

v 18-19. If God doesn’t teach us, we’re like dumb animals.

v 23. No remnant. No future.

Jeremiah 12

v 1.  Why do the wicked prosper? Did not Solomon address this issue?

v 8-9. Lessons from lions and speckled birds.

v 10-13. Pitiful pastors.

v 13.  We say, "No pain? No gain."  God says there is pain that does not gain.

v 16-17. If they will obey …

Vain Heathen Tree Customs

Jeremiah 10

  • v 2. Heathen ways should not be learned
  • v 2. Heathen are upset by signs of heaven.
  • v 3. Heathen customs are vain.
  • v 3-5. Cutting down a tree, fastening it to stand upright, and decking it with silver and gold does no good.
  • v 6. There is none like God. Man can never approximate in art or ritual the greatness and power of God.
  • v 11-13. Only the one and true God has created and sustains the world.
  • v 14. To think that a man could duplicate or emulate such greatness is brutish.
  • v 21-22. Pastors have become brutish by not seeking the Lord.
  • v 23. Do you recognize that, in the end, you do not control your own destiny?
  • v 24-25. Lord, please don’t zap me; zap the heathen instead.

Notes: March 5, 2009 – Kill the Messenger

If you don’t like the news, tear up the newspaper.

Jeremiah 26

  • v 8. "You will surely die." That’s what prophets and priests thought of Jeremiah’s "word of the Lord."
  • v 9. I’ve got good news; and I’ve got bad news.  In Jeremiah’s case, there was no good news.
  • v 12. What credentials do I have? What credentials do I need? God sent me.
  • v 13. Repent of your sin, and God will not send judgment.
  • v 14-15. I am in your hands; but remember Who sent me.
  • v 16. The princes and the people declared the Jeremiah was NOT worthy of death.
  • v 18-23. Different administrations handle disgruntled voices in different manners. Some dissidents get shipped off to the Gulag, some to the dungeon, some to the firing squad.
  • v 24. Jeremiah found a friend at court.

Relics and Repentance

Jeremiah 8

  • v 1. How many generations of bones were accessible in this grave-robbing ritual?
  • v 2. There wasn’t even a pretence of worshiping Jehovah.
  • v 3. What makes a man relish death more than life?
  • v 6. Nobody asked, "What have I done?"
  • v 8. Oh the effrontery that they even claimed God’s word was on their side.
  • v 9. Having rejected the word of the Lord, there is no wisdom in them.
  • v 11. Religious placebos are not new to our generation.
  • v 12. Shameless.
  • v 22. Yes, there is a great Physician in the land; and yes, He has the cure to their diseases. Why then do they still suffer?

Jeremiah 9

  • v 1. I wish I could weep for my sinful people.
  • v 2. I wish I could just get away from them all.
  • v 3. Men show bravery for many reasons. These people are not valiant for truth.
  • v 8. Listen to what they say; but watch out for what they might do.
  • v 13-16. Cause and effect. Sin and its consequences.
  • v 23-24. Now here’s something to brag about.  1 Corinthians 1:19-21; 1 Corinthians 1:27-29.
  • v 25-26. As sin is not restricted to one race, creed, or nation; so the punishment for sin is not restricted to one race, creed, or nation.
