Notes: August 24, 2008 – Psalms 50, 73 & 74

Today’s reading includes Psalms of Asaph. No, not all the Psalms were written by David.

Psalm 50

  • God will judge the earth (v 1-6)
  • God requires more than mere religious ritual (v 7-15)
  • God has no pleasure in the hypocrites who pretend to worship Him (v 16-22)
  • God is glorified by the praise of men who live right (v 23)

 

Psalm 73

  • It’s easy to envy the unsaved who seem to have no troubles (v 1-14)
  • But see the unbelievers as God sees them, and we realize that their end is not what we want for ourselves (v 15 -20)
  • May God forgive us for foolishly and ignorantly doubting Him (v 21-28)

 

Psalm 74

  • Many are those who oppose true and proper worship (v 1-11)
  • God is known for His power in creation (v 12-17)
  • God should exercise that power against those who oppose Israel (18-23)
    • they have reproached the LORD
    • they have blasphemed His name
    • this is His cause
    • these are His enemies
    • this continual rebellion is against God

Notes: August 23, 2008 – Psalms 99 – 101

Psalm 99

  • Does God reign (v 1)? Is He great (v 2)? Is His name holy (v 3)? Does He love righteousness and equity (v 4)?
  • Did Moses, Aaron, Samuel and other believers call upon the Lord (v 6)? Did God answer them, keep His promises, forgive their sins, and avenge them (v 6-8)?
  • Then we should exalt the Lord and worship Him as He requires (v 5, 9).

Psalm 100

  • Make noise (v 1)
  • Serve the Lord (v 2)
  • Come, singing (v 2)
  • Know about God (v 3)
  • Enter into the presence of the Almighty (v 4)
  • Be thankful (v 4)
  • Bless God’s name (v 4)
  • He is worthy (v 5)

Notes: August 22, 2008 – Psalms 96-98

Psalm 96

The God of Israel is the God of the universe; and He should be praised universally.

  • all the earth (v 1)
  • among the heathen (v 2)
  • among all people
  • above all gods (v 4-5)
  • all kinds of people (v 7)
  • all the earth (v 9)
  • among the heathen (v 10)
  • the heavens (v 11)
  • the earth
  • the sea
  • the field (v 12)
  • the trees

God will judge the earth with righteousness and truth (v 13)

 

Psalm 97

  • Do you rejoice because the LORD reigns? (v 1)
  • The heavens declare the glory of God (v 6, Psalm 19:1-3); do you?
  • Are you confused? Maybe you are worshiping idols (v 7).
  • Do you hate evil? If you love the LORD, you should (v 10).
  • Are you thankful for God’s holiness (v 12)?

 

Psalm 98

  • God has revealed His righteous salvation (v 2-3). Have you seen it?
  • Joyful, joyful, we (should) adore Him (v 4-8)
  • God will judge the earth with righteousness and equity (v 13, Psalm 96:13)

Notes: August 21, 2008 – Psalms 94 & 95

Psalm 94

  • Men continue in sin because they think that there is no God watching (Psalm 94:7)
  • Men should know that God does know all their sinful thoughts and ways (Psalm 94:8-11)
  • Men who offend believers shall not go unpunished (Psalm 94:22-23)

 

Psalm 95

  • Come, let us worship God our Creator (v 1-6)
  • Let us not make the mistake of our unbelieving ancestors (v 7-11)
  • Read the New Testament application of these words: Hebrews 3:7-17); Hebrews 4:1-11).
