Notes: August 20, 2008 – Psalms 92 & 93

Psalm 92

  • A sabbath day song (Psalm 92:1). Do you praise God more on some days and occasions?
  • It is a good thing. When the unsaved assert that they do good, do they ever mention their praise of God? No, of course not. How could they (Psalm 92:6; 1 Corinthians 2:14)?
  • When men want to flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar (Psalm 92:12), they must not forget that this must be in the presence of God (Psalm 92:13), so that even in old age (Psalm 92:14) they will bring forth the fruit of praising God (Psalm 92:15).

Psalm 93

  • God’s government shall be forever.
  • God’s government has been forever.

Notes: August 19, 2008 – Psalms 116 to 118

Psalm 116

Do you love the LORD? Why? (Psalm 116:1)

  • Has He listened to you (v 2)?
  • Has He saved you from any trouble (v 3-4)?
  • Has He been gracious to you (v 5)?
  • Has He preserved you (v 6)?
  • Has He dealt bountifully with you (v 7)?
  • Has He kept you from falling (v 8)?

Why do some people talk about the Lord all the time? Because they believe (Psalm 116:10).

What can you do to show God your appreciation for all of His benefits toward you (v 12-19)

  • You can call upon the name of the Lord privately (v 13)
  • You can join others in praising God publicly (v 14, 18-19)
  • You can be thankful (v 17)

Psalm 117

Praise the Lord because

  • His mercy is great
  • His truth is forever

Psalm 118

  • A personal testimony of how God has helped (v 1-19)
  • A pious desire to be in the house of the Lord (v 20-29)

Meditation Points:

  1. Psalm 118:22-23. New Testament’s interpretation? This is about Jesus, His resurrection and His church! Matthew 21:42; Mark 12:10-11; Luke 20:17; Acts 4:11; Ephesians 2:20-22; 1 Peter 2:4-8.
  2. This is the day that the Lord has made (Psalm 118:24)-the day of Christ’s victory over death. Yes, what cause for joy!

Notes: August 18, 2008 – Psalms 114 & 115

Meet (and Magnify) Your Maker

Psalm 114

  • people of strange language (Psalm 114:1). Jesus said that your words would either justify you or condemn you. Listen to the way unbelievers speak. If they speak of God at all, they either use His name as a curse word or they obviously speak about Someone with whom they have no personal acquaintance. They can speak for hours about a world of subjects and never once recognize God’s part in the matter.
  • tremble at the presence of the Lord (Psalm 114:7). We stand in awe of the swimmer who wins 8 gold medals in a single Olympics competition; but do we have any wonder about the God who created the water for swimming or the body that swims?

Psalm 115

  • Where is their God? ( Psalm 115:2) Is your God the sovereign Lord who inhabits the heavens and does whatever He pleases; or is your god the fabrication of a spiritually dead imagination and creative human effort?
  • As Israel in general, and the house of Aaron in particular, have experienced the grace of God and they should continue both to trust Him and to praise Him (verses 9-16), so we should trust and praise our benevolent Creator.
  • Don’t wait until you are dead to meet your Maker (Psalm 115:17-18)
