A Word for Babylon

Isaiah 13

  • Babylon will be destroyed by foreigners sent by God (v 5)
  • When this day of the Lord comes, the heavens will shake and earth will be moved (v 9, 13)
  • Dragons? (Isaiah 13:22)

Isaiah 14

  • Israel will be delivered from Babylon’s cruelty
  • Who is Lucifer (v 12-20)? What does the text actually say?
  • God’s purposes discussed (v 24-27)
  • Sinful people have no reason to boast in God’s deliverance (v 29-32)

Notes: January 5, 2009 – Isaiah 10 to 12

The Rebellious and the Redeemed

Isaiah 10

  • God’s wrath is against the hypocritical nation (v 6)
  • Being used of God to discipline sinners is no guarantee that you are right with God (v 7, 12-15)
  • God detests idolatry in all people, even in those who claim to be His people (v 11)
  • A remnant shall be saved (v 20-22)
  • The Assyrians will attack (v 28-31)

Isaiah 11

  • Christ, the Messiah, will establish his kingdom by words not weapons (v 1-5). See also: Isa 53:2, Zechariah 6:12, Rev 5:5, Isaiah 42:1, Isaiah 61:1
  • Christ’s kingdom will be one of peace and unity (v 6-9)
  • Christ will attract all men, not just Jews (v 10-16)

Isaiah 12

  • Those who are saved will thank God for His mercy

Notes: January 4, 2009 – King Ahaz, Part 3

2 Kings 16, 2 Chronicles 28

  • Ahaz, enamored with Syrian religion, ordered that similar worship furniture be constructed in Jerusalem
  • Ahaz didn’t get foxhole religion. Instead, when under great pressure, he turned to Syrian gods.
  • Ahaz died as king of Judah; but he was not buried along with other kings.

Isaiah 8-10

  • Ahaz’s unholy alliances with pagan nations spurred a prophetic message against such confederations.
  • Ahaz’s sin gives occasion for God to announce the coming Messiah (Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 9:6-7)
  • Ahaz’s disobedience to the word of God gives occasion for the rule that only God’s law is truth (Isaiah 8:20)
