Notes: February 15, 2009 – Isaiah 52 & 53

Jesus the Suffering Savior

Isaiah 52

  • v 1.  How many times in this book have we read, “Awake, awake”?
  • v 3. The people who have prostituted themselves for nothing, will be redeemed for nothing. The greatest sin will be rectified by the greatest salvation.
  • v 6. Only a saved people can know who God is.
  • v 7. Do you want beautiful feet? Then go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15; Romans 10:15.
  • v 11. What should you do when you find yourself in an ungodly environment? Get out. 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1.
  • v 13-15, and continuing though chapter 53. Is there any doubt of whom the prophet speaks? Acts 8:32-35.

Isaiah 53

  • v 1. The Jews did not believe what Isaiah said about the Messiah. Have you believed the report? Romans 10:16.
  • v 2. He would be nothing special by human standards.
  • v 3. Men would reject Him, even despising Him.
  • v 4. He would suffer during His life on earth.
  • v 5. His suffering would be on our behalf, because of our sin.
  • v 6. Who among us has not sinned?
  • v 7. Though facing an unjust crucifixion, He did not seek to save Himself.
  • v 8. His death was not a random event; He died for God’s people.
  • v 9. He lived and died among wicked men; and He was buried in a rich man’s tomb.
  • v 10. Wicked men killed Him; but it was according to God’s plan that He might make an (eternal, and once-for-all) offering for sin.
  • v 11. Would you be right with God? Then you must know Him.
  • v 12. Does God’s Son merit an inheritance? Though crucified between two thieves who deserved to die, He alone bare the sin of many others, and He today yet intercedes for them.

Notes: February 14, 2009 – Isaiah 50 & 51

The wages of sin and God’s mercy on sinners

Isaiah 50

  • v 1-3. Israel’s sin has brought trouble upon themselves. One must not think that God is unable to save them.
  • v 4-9. Is there any doubt who this One is? Isaiah 50:6.
  • v 10-11. Therefore, trust in God and yourselves.

Isaiah 51

  • v 1-2. Consider Abraham and Sarah as examples of faith. Read Hebrews 11 for other examples.
  • v 3-8. God’s salvation is forever. Isaiah 51:6, but men are easily swayed.
  • v 9-16. A prayer and a response.
  • v 17-23. God’s pity upon Jerusalem.

Notes: February 13, 2009 – Isaiah 48 & 49

The Messiah-Servant

Isaiah 48

  • v 1. How many people have you met who “make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness”?
  • v 5. Prophecy preserves God’s glory-by announcing in advance what He intends to do, God proves that He, and not the idols, has done it.
  • v 9. God is to be glorified for His mercy.
  • v 11. God will not share His glory with another.
  • v 14. God always does His pleasure. Revelation 4:10-11.
  • v 16. God does not speak in secret societies or cryptic messages.
  • v 17. Interested in profit? Let God teach you.
  • v 22. There cannot be world peace this side of eternity. Isaiah 48:22.

Isaiah 49

  • v 1-5. The Servant, called from birth, ministers to Israel with little effect.
  • v 5-12. The Servant is sent to the world. John 3:16.
  • v 13-16. God has written His people on the palm of His hand lest He forget them.
  • v 17-26. God, with a mighty hand, will deliver His people.
