When God wars against the heathen

Ezekiel 39

  • Continuing the prophecy about Gog
  • God’s thorough judgment against the enemy of Israel (v. 1-7).
  • Seven years required to clean up after the war (v. 8-20)
  • God will be known by His actions (v. 21-22).
  • The heathen will know that Israel’s woes result from Israel’s sins (v. 23-24).
  • God will not cast away His people forever (v. 25-29)

Those bones, those dry bones

Ezekiel 37

  • Dry bones come to life – teaching that the nation of Israel will come alive again (v. 1-14).
  • Two sticks joined together – teaching that Israel will be united again (v. 15-20).
  • The nation will be united as one nation under God, indivisible (v. 21-28).

Ezekiel 38

  • Although returned to the land, Israel’s enemies yet abound. In this chapter and the next, we learn about God and allies, enemies of Israel (v. 1-9)
  • Although the enemies are self-assured of victory, God will deliver His people (v. 10-16).
  • A jealous God will pour out His fury upon the enemies of His people (v. 17-23).

New creation

Ezekiel 36

  • Rejoice your enemies are destroyed (v. 1-7). Is sin your enemy? Is death your enemy? Rejoice that Christ has destroyed your enemies.
  • Rejoice in your reinstatement to favor with God (v. 8-15). Are sin and death destroyed on your behalf? Rejoice that they no longer separate you from God.
  • Rejoice that God saves you for His name’s sake (v. 16-24). Your sins have separated you from God; but God’s grace brings you close to Him again.
  • Rejoice that you are a new creation from inside out (v. 25-27). God gives sinners a new heart and a new spirit that they might serve Him.
  • Rejoice that God restores you to a Garden of Eden relationship with Him and his creation (v. 28-37).

The Good Shepherd

Ezekiel 34

  • Woe to the shepherds of Israel (v. 1-2).
  • They are unfaithful in their duties toward the sheep whom God loves (v. 3-6).
  • They will lose their jobs (v. 7-10).
  • God will be the shepherd (v. 11-16).
  • The bully sheep will be punished (v. 17-22).
  • The great and good shepherd, the Messiah, the son of David, shall come (v. 23-31).

Ezekiel 35

  • Edom shall be destroyed along with Judah (v. 1-4).
  • Edom opposed the people of God and sought to possess their land (v. 5-11).
  • Worse, Edom opposed God Himself; and they shall be punished (v. 12-15)
