Contrasts

Precept, principle and parable. Jesus shows the nature of spiritual life.

Luke 12:1-21

  • Hypocrisy: when private life differs strikingly from public life (v. 1-3).
  • Fear of death and a physical grave vs. eternal death and hell (v. 4-5).
  • Man is more valuable to God than birds, and God knows all about His birds (v. 6-7).
  • Our willingness to align ourselves with Christ and Christ’s willingness to align himself with us (v. 8-12).
  • Riches on earth vs. riches in heaven (v. 13-21).

6 Woe’s (continued)

More on the invitation to a dinner turned heated discussion.

Luke 11:37-54

  • It seemed innocent. A Pharisee invited Jesus to dinner. Jesus accepted.
  • The host quickly noticed that Jesus was not following the Pharisaical traditions regarding ritual washing before eating.
  • Jesus countered that washing the outside without washing the inside was foolish.
  • Then Jesus pointed out ways in which the Pharisees and lawyers were guilty of living contrary to God’s holy commands.
  • After he was done, the Pharisees and lawyers continued to press Jesus on various matters, hoping to trip him up so that they might have reason to accuse him of sin.

Signs of Sonship

In today’s reading, we see more evidence of the deity of Christ.

Luke 11:14-36

  • If casting out demons is not sufficient, what else do you need to see? (v. 14-26)
  • More blessed than the virgin Mary are those who hear the word of God and do it (v. 27-28).
  • As Jonah was a sign to Nineveh in his day, so Jesus is a sign to his generation (v. 29-30).
  • And the people of Nineveh, along with the Queen of Sheba, will witness against the generation that sees but rejects Jesus (v. 31-32).
  • Jesus, the Light of the World, gives bright, shining light that cannot be hidden to his people (v. 33-36)
