A Pregnant Illustration

Although not all have nor can experience having a baby, we all have heard about the experience. Jesus uses the child birth experience to illustrate the joy his disciples will have.

John 16:17-22

  • 17-18. The disciples wanted Jesus to explain further what he meant by going to the Father and not being seen and then later being seen.
  • 19. Jesus knew what their concern was.
  • 20. The principle: The world will rejoice that Jesus is gone; but his disciples will weep and lament. But their sorrow will be turned into joy.
  • 21. The illustration: A pregnant woman experiences great pain at child birth; but after the baby arrives she forgets the pain and rejoices in the baby.
  • 22. The application: The disciples will experience painful sorrow at the loss of Jesus; but when they see him again they will forget the sorrow and they will have a joy that cannot be taken away.

The Comforter Will Come

It’s hard to lose someone you love, someone who has been your mentor and provider. Jesus comforts his disciples before he goes.

John 16:1-16

Persecution will come

  • 1. Don’t let persecution cause you to stumble in your faith
  • 2. Those who persecute you will think that they are working for God
  • 3. They persecute you in the name of God but they don’t know God
  • 4. I want you to remember these words when the persecution comes

The Holy Spirit will come

  • 5-7. I must go away so that the Comforter can come to you
  • 8-11. He will reprove the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. Sin because they don’t believe in me; righteousness because I am going to my Father; and judgment because evil will be judged.
  • 12-14. He will teach you many things that I cannot teach you now.

Jesus will come

  • 15-16. Yes, I am going to the Father; but you will see me.
