Psalm 102

A Prayer of the Afflicted

  • I need help
  • I expect help
  • The heathen need help
  • Help comes from the Lord
  • God is eternal
  • God’s help is eternal

Psalm 140

A Psalm of David

  • I need help because of these wicked people
  • Thank You, Lord, for helping me
  • I know, Lord, what I’d like You to do to them

Psalm 141

A Psalm of David

  • Lord, please accept my worship
  • Lord, help me to walk uprightly
  • Lord, correct me when I’m wrong
  • Lord, I will not be detracted from You by my problems

Notes: September 16 – 2 Samuel 17

How God contravenes the wisdom of men

  • Ahithophel advises an immediate surprise attack against David (v 1-4)
  • Hushai advises a delay (v 5-13)
  • After Absolom agrees with him, Hushai sends word to David of the thwarted attack (v 14-16)
  • The messengers are nearly caught, but they eventually get word to David (v 17-22)
  • Ahithophel can’t bear the rejection, and he kills himself (v 23)
  • Three men bring food for David and his people (v 27-29)

Notes: September 15 – 2 Samuel 16

David and Mephibosheth (v 1-4)

  • Ziba reports that Mephibosheth, of the house of Saul, longs to be king
  • Ziba is granted Mephibosheth’s estate as his own

David and Shimei (v 5-14)

  • Shimei, also of the house of Saul, casts stone and curses at David (v 5-9)
  • David does not retaliate; but instead he defers to the will of God (v 10-13)

Absolom and Ahithophel (v 15-23)

  • Hushai succeeds in covering his real reason for abiding in Jerusalem (v 15-19)
  • Ahithophel displays great (if not wicked) advice for the usurping king (v 20-23)

Notes: September 14 – Psalms 27 & 28

Psalm 27

  • Who is your light? Who is your salvation? (v 1)
  • Are you afraid of anything? anyone?
  • If you could have one thing from God, what would it be? (v 4)
  • When God says, “Jump”, do you jump? (v 8)
  • If your friends and parents abandon you, to whom will you turn? (v 10)
  • Faith in God’s goodness prevents fainting (v 13).
  • Those who know God can recommend that others know Him, too (v 14).

 

Psalm 28

  • If God doesn’t speak to me, I’m no better than the unsaved (v 1).
  • Hypocrisy is not a 20th century invention (v 3).
  • Merely ignoring God merits His wrath (v 5).
  • Since God saved me, I know that He will save all of His people (v 6-9)
