Trust in the Lord

2 Chronicles 16

  • :1-3 When Baasha, king of Israel, plotted a siege of Jerusalem, Asa turned to the Syrians for help
  • :4 Benhadad of Syria answered the call and delivered Judah from their familial nemesis to the north.
  • :6 Because Asa leaned upon the unbelieving Syrians rather than the God who had delivered him in the past, God sent a prophet to reprimand the king.
  • :10 Asa, unhappy with the Lord’s chastening, arrested the prophet.
  • :12-13: The last 2 years of his life, Asa was afflicted with diseased feet

1 Kings 15

  • :25 Jereboam was succeeded by his evil son Nadab (remember Aaron’s evil son Nadab, Leviticus 10:1-2)
  • :27 After two years as king, Nadab and all the house of Jereboam were slain, just as God had promise/threatened Jereboam.
  • :34 Baasha was wicked, too.

Note: mark how often the sinfulness of Jereboam is mentioned by way of comparison with later kings of Israel

The prophet’s challenge

  • :1 The Spirit of God came upon Azariah. Notice how often the Spirit of God is mentioned in the Old Testament. This is a strong argument against the anti-trinitarians.
  • :2 Many people talk about God; but how many actually speak FOR God?
  • :2 Does not God want men to seek Him and to find him?
  • :3 Imagine being in a land without the true God, without qualified teachers, without God’s law. Now imagine living in just about any modern society with its soft-spoken teachers of love without God.
  • :7 Be strong. 1 Corinthians 15:58
  • :9 Even the foreigners were called to God
  • :13 And the penalty for not worshipping God?

Asa does right

1 Kings 15

  • :11 Asa did right in the eyes of the Lord. Does any other opinion really matter?
  • :12 he removed the sodomites and the idols. Now that wouldn’t be considered politically correct today, would it?
  • :13 he removed his mother from being queen and he destroyed her idol. How disrespectful can a son be?

2 Chronicles 14

  • :4 he commanded his people to seek the LORD. What happened to separation of church and state?
  • :6 The LORD gave him rest. Some folks are disturbed by a gnat. Asa had rest from his enemies.
  • :8 he faced an army almost twice the size of his
  • :11 he called upon the LORD for help, demonstrating his knowledge of God

One wicked king against another

  • Abijam took the throne of Judah at the death of his father Rehoboam ( 1 Kings 15:1)
  • And, like his father, Abijam sinned against God (vs 3)
  • Also, like his father, Abijam warred against Jereboam (2 Chronicles 13:2)
  • He pleaded with his brothers to the north not to rebel against God (vs 5)
  • And he warned them of the futility of fighting God (vs 8).
  • They were ostracized for their liberal ordination policies (vs 9-10)
  • He declared the God was on his side (vs 12)
  • God proved this by delivering Judah from the ambush that Jereboam had set for them (vs 16-18)
