Ecclesiastes 11

  • Charity/kindness (vs 1-4)
  • Since you don’t know the complete will of God, you should work hard, but expect trouble (vs 5-8)
  • Judgment day is coming (vs 9-10)

Ecclesiastes 12

  • Remember that you have a Creator; remember your Creator (vs 1)
  • A figurative description of aging (vs 2-8)
    • winter, not springtime, of life (vs 2)
    • hands, legs, teeth, eyes (vs 3)
    • lips, mouth, voice/hearing, loss of sleep (vs 4)
    • feebleness, fear, hair loss, loss of appetite (vs 5)
    • spinal cord, brain, heart (vs 6)
    • death and decay (vs 7)
  • An example of teaching others (vs 9-12)
  • The conclusion: Fear God (Ecclesiates 12:13-14)

Notes: November 14, 2008 – Ecclesiastes 8 to 10

Ecclesiastes 8

  • Does your face shine? (vs 1)
  • Do you honor your political leaders? (vs 2-4; 1 Peter 2:17; Daniel 4:37)
  • Do you know that you will die? (vs 5-8)
  • Are you bossy, or a bully? (vs 9)
  • Do you not see that, in the end, evil shall be punished? (vs 10-13)
  • Do you wonder why some things happen contrary to what you expect? (vs 14-17)

Ecclesiastes 9

  • Does anyone know his earthly future? (vs 1-3)
  • Life and death stir up many questions (vs 4-6)
  • Enjoy the life that God has given you (vs 7-10)
  • Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, things don’t work out (vs 11)
  • The snares and pitfalls of life (vs 12-13)
  • The forgotten (and unappreciated) wise man (vs 14-18)

Ecclesiastes 10

  • Don’t destroy your reputation in a moment of foolishness (vs 1-3)
  • Learn how to behave before your king (vs 4, 20)
  • The world is often upside down (vs 5-7)
  • You reap what you sow (vs 8-10)
  • Words of wisdom; words of folly (vs 11-15)
  • Your choice of king (vs 16-17)
  • Idleness, ease and money (vs 18-19)

Notes: November 13, 2008 – Ecclesiastes 6 & 7

Some things are better than others

  • Why work and accumulate if you aren’t going to spend it? (6:1-2)
  • Having a large family and living to an old age doesn’t satisfy the soul (vs 3-6)
  • How can you know what is best? (vs 7-12)
  • A good name is desirable. So is death. (Ecclesiastes 7:1).
  • Sorrow should teach us (vs 2-5).
  • Finishing is better than merely starting a thing (7:8)
  • Don’t be soon angry (7:9)
  • Don’t long for “the good old days.” (7:10)
  • Money is good; but wisdom is better (vs 11-12, 19)
  • Consider God’s providence (vs 13-15)
  • Don’t be extreme in anything (vs 16-18)
  • All men are sinners (Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 3:23)
  • Watch what you say-mind your mouth (vs 21-22)
  • Wisdom is difficult to attain (vs 23-25)
  • A bad woman is worse than death (vs 26)
  • There are a few good men; and no good women (Ecclesiastes 7:27-29)

Notes: November 12, 2008 – Ecclesiastes 4 & 5

Life is tough

  • The dead don’t suffer any longer; but it’s better never to have been born (Ecclesiastes 4:1-3)
  • It’s funny, men envy all these things that don’t satisfy the soul (Ecclesiastes 4:4)
  • Idleness is folly (4:5)
  • Why does a single person work so hard? (4:6-8)
  • Having a friend is better than being a hermit (4:9-12).
  • A child is better than a king when the child is wise and king is old and foolish (4:13).
  • Public opinion is fickle (4:14-16)
  • Are you religious? Don’t make promises you can’t (or won’t) keep. (5:1-7).
  • Don’t be surprised by injustice and oppression (vs 8)
  • Don’t be covetous (vs 10-11)
  • Honest labor helps you sleep (vs 12)
  • Why labor to accumulate stuff? You can’t take it with you. (vs 13-17)
  • Did I tell you? Learn to enjoy life (vs 18-20).
