One king in Judah and five kings in Israel

  • Uzziah, the 16-year old king of Judah who ruled for 52 years (vs 1-7)
  • Zachariah, king of Israel (vs 8-11)
  • Shallum’s one month rule (vs 12-15)
  • Menahem’s 10-year reign of evil (vs 16-22)
  • Pekaiah replaced Menahem, but not his evil rule (vs 23-26)
  • Pekah became king of Israel in the 52nd year of Uzziah (vs 27-31)

Notes: December 16, 2008 – Amos 7, 8, & 9

God’s certain judgment of Israel

Amos 7

  • Amos prayed for his nation (vs 2, 5). Do you pray for your nation?
  • A plumbline indicates whether an item is upright or not. What plumbline do you use to check your soul?
  • Can you imagine a priest who does not want to hear the word of God (vs 10-13)?
  • God doesn’t require college education of all His prophets (vs 14).

Amos 8

  • Some people are fastidious about religious ritual, but immoral most of their lives (vs 5).
  • Imagine a land without food. Now imagine a famine of hearing the words of the Lord (vs 11).

Amos 9

  • David knew (Psalm 139) that man can’t hide from God. Amos delivers the same message (vs 1-4).

The fall of Israel predicted

Amos 5

  • Seek the Lord (Amos 5:4, 6, 8)
  • Hate evil; love good (Amos 5:14)
  • Can’t wait for the end of the world? (Amos 5:18)
  • God doesn’t approve nor appreciate all forms of worship (Amos 5:21-23)
  • Amos 6
  • Misused luxury is not a blessing (vs 1-6)
  • Political adversaries may be raised up by God (vs 14)

God’s word of warning for Israel

Amos 3

  • God is unable to discuss this problem with Israel (vs 1-3)
  • illustrations of judgment (vs 4-8)
  • the heathen will be witnesses (vs 9-10
  • an adversary is coming (vs 11-12)
  • against idolatry and sinful luxury (vs 13-15)

Amos 4

  • against the greedy rich (vs 1-5)
  • past judgments have been ineffective (vs 6-11)
  • God’s invitation to Israel (vs 12-13)
