As they were eating…

Jesus and his disciples were eating the Passover meal on the night before he was crucified.

Matthew 26:26-29

Contrast the simplicity of Jesus’ action with the choreographed Eucharist so often found today.

  • Jesus took bread
  • Jesus blessed the bread
  • Jesus gave the bread to the disciples.
  • Jesus said “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19
  • Jesus took the cup.
  • Jesus gave thanks.
  • Jesus gave the cup to the disciples and invited all of them to drink from it.
  • Jesus said “This is my blood…”

Contrast the significance of Jesus’ action with the sacerdotal Eucharist so often found today.

Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-25.

  • “This do in remembrance of me.” NOT in order to facilitate the forgiveness of sins.
  • Jesus said that his blood was shed for the remission of sins. Christ died once for all. Any pretense that mass is a “re-enactment” of Christ’s atoning sacrifice is blasphemy.
  • Jesus said to the eleven that his body was (to be) broken for them.  Do you think that he intended for them to have assurance of salvation?
  • Jesus said that his blood was (to be) shed under the new testament/covenant.  Read the book of Hebrews and see that the old covenant has been replaced.
  • Jesus said that the remission of sins which his blood would obtain would be for many. We know that Jesus died for many.  Did he die for you?
